42 Percent of 92,081 Candidates Worldwide Go for the Gold and Pass June 2008 CFA Exams

Record-breaking number of candidates sat for the June 2008 examinations

Charlottesville, Va., August 19, 2008 − More than 92,000 candidates worldwide in the CFA Program were going for the gold standard of the investment profession when they sat for the June 2008 exams. Today it was announced that 42 percent of those candidates passed, bringing them one step closer to earning the distinguished CFA charter.

To earn the CFA charter, candidates must sequentially pass three six-hour exams that are widely considered to be among the most arduous in the investment profession.

The Level I global pass rate was 35 percent (44,063 took the exam) and the Level II global pass rate was 46 percent (33,449 took the exam). Of the 14,569 individuals who in June 2008 took the third and final exam that leads to the prestigious CFA designation, 53 percent passed. CFA Institute expects the majority of those candidates who passed the Level III exam will become CFA charterholders later this year, bringing the number of charterholders worldwide to more than 89,000. More than one million exams have been administered since the inauguration of the CFA Program in 1963. The average historical global pass rates are 45 percent for Level I, 50 percent for Level II, and 65 percent for Level III. “Successful candidates in the CFA Program demonstrate a mastery of essential investment and finance concepts, as well as a profound understanding of the global marketplace” said Robert Johnson, CFA, deputy CEO of CFA Institute. “The content of the program evolves annually to reflect changing industry developments and new challenges, and is determined through a regular, extensive survey of practicing CFA charterholders. For example, equity security analysis and ethical standards have remained important since the program’s inception 45 years ago, but over the years, topics such as wealth planning, International Financial Reporting Standards, and alternative and derivative investments have been incorporated to keep pace with the evolution and globalization of the profession.”

The CFA curriculum also includes debt analysis, fixed income analysis, financial statement analysis, quantitative methods, economics, corporate finance, portfolio management, risk management, asset allocation, and performance measurement.

CFA Institute recommends candidates spend a minimum of 250 hours preparing for each of the three exams. On average, CFA candidates take four years to pass the three required exams. The Level I exam is offered twice per year, while the Level II and Level III exams are offered once each year. (Access registration information.) The Level I exam consists of multiple-choice questions. Level II is composed of item sets (i.e., mini cases with detailed vignettes) and the questions at Level III are 50 percent item set and 50 percent short answer and essay.

Those who passed the Level III exam − 7,720 candidates − will begin receiving their CFA charters in early October, provided that they also have completed the minimum work-experience requirement of four years in the investment industry, signed a commitment to abide by the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, apply to a CFA Institute society, and become a member of CFA Institute.

“CFA charterholders maintain high ethical standards and objectivity, and are dedicated to staying current on industry developments through lifelong learning,” said Jeff Diermeier, CFA, president and CEO of CFA Institute. “These qualities foster confidence and inspire trust in charterholders’ expertise among clients and employers alike.”

Just as earning the CFA charter shows that an investment professional is committed to a higher standard, hiring a CFA charterholder signifies that a firm is, too. Employers with the largest number of CFA charterholders include Bank of America, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, JP Morgan Chase & Co, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and RBC.

Regulators around the world also recognize the value of the CFA charter. Nearly all U.S. state securities commissions grant CFA charterholders an exemption to their licensing exams for investment advisers. The NYSE and FINRA provide an exemption from the analytical portion (Series 86) of the Research Analyst Qualification Exam (Series 86/87) for certain applicants who have passed Level II of the CFA exam. Additionally, regulators in Australia, Canada, Greece, Hong Kong, Singapore, Turkey, and Vietnam accept the CFA designation as meeting their licensing or qualification requirements. In Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand, passing a certain level of the CFA exam is required in order to practice in the jurisdiction.

“At this point we have not witnessed a fall off in enrollments for the CFA Program despite the current financial market contagion. Serious investment professionals recognize that earning the CFA charter is a valuable asset to one’s professional portfolio,” Diermeier said. “As a global symbol of industry expertise, the CFA designation is transportable across geographic borders and highly regarded in all financial sectors. More and more, we are seeing ‘CFA required’ in job postings worldwide, a sign that qualified professionals with the charter are in high demand.”

Select colleges and universities around the world have an appreciation for the global relevance of the CFA charter and the advantages it provides for their graduates. These institutions have been identified by CFA Institute as CFA Program Partners and embedded at least 70 percent of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge into their degree programs, as well as committed to cover the CFA Institute ethical and professional standards in the curriculum. This recognition signals students and the marketplace that the university curriculum is closely tied to professional practice and is well suited to preparing students to sit for the CFA exams. Currently, there are 63 CFA Program Partners on six continents, including Said Business School at the University of Oxford and The Johnson School at Cornell University.

June 2008 Exam Results by Country/Region

By country/region, the pass rates for the Level I, Level II, and Level III exams combined are:

• United States: 43 percent of the 28,306 total exam candidates
• Canada: 41 percent of the 7,768 total exam candidates
• Europe: 46 percent of the 15,656 total exam candidates
• Asia and Pacific Asia: 40 percent of the 33,936 total exam candidates
• Central and South America: 37 percent of the 1,543 total exam candidates
• Africa/Middle East: 28 percent of the 4,872 total exam candidates

Non-North American countries and territories with the largest number of candidates that took a CFA exam were Mainland China (8,510), Hong Kong (6,194), United Kingdom (6,169), India (4,103), Singapore (3,838), South Korea (3,357), Australia (1,864), Taiwan (1,555), Germany (1,429), and Switzerland (1,264).

Pass (cioè passato)


Col metodo 40/60/80 la sessione mattutina l'ho fatta col 64.44%, pomeriggio 68%, totale 66.22%. La mattina ho sbagliato le domande sul settore dove lavoro (risk management), sulla materia principale del lavoro (asset allocation) e alternative investments, su cui lavoravo prima dell'esame. Pomeriggio male economics (quello che ho studiato all'univ) e equity (la materia più divertente e che mi interessa di più). Si vede che imparo meglio le cose che non so.

Bello agosto a Paris. Non c'è traffico, la metro la mattina è vuota. I francesi non ci sono, rimpiazzati da orde di turisti. Tantitroppi 'taliani. L'ufficio anch'esso è semi vuoto (Gadget che balla coi canguri, Ariano in ferie da oggi e in partenza da mesi, lavoratori al 33% - cioè 3 su 9) e la produttività ai minimi storici. Oggi il mio telefono ha squillato una volta: ho abbassato la suoneria per non disturbare.

Martedì scorso (prima che andassi al Nord) arrivarono Aljosa&Tanja (new gossip del jet-set carsolino). Prudente come solo un assicuratore sa essere ho anticipato le ferie di 1 giorno. Pac-pac [autopacca di compiacimento sulla spalla]. Dopo alcune birre di benvenuto nel bistrot sotto casa ceniamo e poi andiamo al baretto scrauso Omadis per incontrare la Cantautrice (che all'epoca mi fu presentata da Tanja) e i suoi amici e il Lanfur.

Beviamo un paio di birre fuori sul marciapiede (il bar è un buco); nel mentre un personaggio ci fa ridere, perché portava i pantaloni a vita bassa, molto bassa, cintura sotto le chiappe. Sgigniazziamo alle sue spalle chiamandolo er mutanda. Dopo un po' sento casino dietro di me e sto tipo stava mollando pugni e d'istinto lo prendo per il collo e finiamo a terra. Un po' di bordello ma finisce lì senza danni [appunto personale: non intervenire in risse in cui non centri, potrebbe non essere salutare]. Intanto il bar chiude e confabuliamo dove andare. Si va tutti dalla Cantautrice (7 persone circa).

Per strada vediamo er mutanda che dorme beato per terra, parcheggiato tra due macchine. Io lo avrei lasciato li, invece gli altri dicono "poveretto, magari sta male, guarda che occhio che ha". Sopra l'occhio sinistro aveva una bolla enorme. Roba da pronto soccorso. Secondo Aljosa le ha prese dai Senegalesi.

Decidono di svegliarlo. Lui non è d'accordo, si incazza e prende David per il collo, cerchiamo di separarli. Arriva il russo e dice "faccio io!" e gli molla un pugnetto (POK!) sulla bolla sopra l'occhio. Con questo gesto di simpatia er mutanda se ne va, calmo e tranquillo. Morale: mai disturbare l'ubriaco che dorme con un occhio pesto.

Denmark (e un poco de Swerige)

6 giorni a Copenhague a casa di Breda e del Vikingo.

Fatti salienti:
- giovedi partenza con alcuni postumi (visita improvvisata di Aljosa&Tanja - faro' un posto apposta con foto). Arrivo per la cena nell'appartamento super design.


- venerdì giro in bici per il centro e a Christiania (free state of). Strambo posto, ma gente simpatica. Pioveva.


- venerdì sera festa di compleanno con una ventina di danesi e 4 zamejci (moi, la festeggiata, Daniela from opcine and Matjaz from lonjer). Grigliata con cevapcici e raznici. Bevande: vin con pesche, pimm's, birra, vino, mojito, cuba libre, pampero pero, vodka, tequila, grappa, slivovec (nell'ordine).


- sabato gita oltre il ponte che unisce Copenhagen a Malmoe - un po' come il ponte tra Trento e Trieste, ma lì c'hanno il mare in mezzo e un ponte vero.
- sabato sera: festival musicale in porto dove vado con il longerino Matjaz. Tre palchi, suonano i Mercury Rev (vediamo un paio di canzoni) e i Sigur Ros sul main stage (qui un live a NY); sul secondo c'erano The Guillemots (non imperdibili); terzo palco al coperto roba danese, buttato un orecchio. Continuazione a Christiania, ritorno in bici in the metro (pioveva).
- domenica: splendido brunch a nord di copenhagen, sul mare. Pioveva un po'. Pomeriggio olimpionico (=divano+olimpiadi).
- lunedì: bel sole finalmente, giro turistico in bici,

in centro,

poi sirenetta...

...poi volevo vedere il cambio della guardia, ma la guardia reale era impegnata a buttare sardoni (o arringhe?) ad una turista...


...e poi aperitivo/cena/digestivo.

- martedì partenza, arrivo alle 17.30 all'aeroporto parigio; tra valige, treno a singhiozzo, incendio a gare du nord, metro piena, torno a casa alle 20. 2 ore e mezza, nuovo record storico. Bon che no gavevo furia.


Aggiungo alcune acute e ponderate osservazioni socio-culturali sugli usi e costumi danesi:

- i danesi sono molto salutisti: mai visto a un concerto accanto al bancone della birra uno stand con frutta. Idem sulle strade in centro, accanto ai venditori di hotdog, bici a tre ruote con bancarella di frutta da passeggio (bicchiere di plastica e dentro frutta pulita).
- i danesi bevi come ludri
- si può ancora fumare nei bar (non tutti)
- xe tante bionde
- me sembra che a Malmoe xe ancora più bionde
- le sedie accanto ai tavolini all'aperto dei bar sono coperte da coperte con cui si coprono gli avventori
- design: sono molto attenti al design e all'arredamento. Guarda qua.

Ulteriore aggiunta:
- la Danimarca è un po' come la Slovenia, solo che al posto di Lasko e Union ci sono Carlsberg e Tuborg.

D'estate i post son più rari.

Cosa vi racconto? Beh, periodo di ferie e allora parliamo di lavoro.

Qua stanno sbaraccando. E non solo per le vacanze.

Approfitto per buttare un paio di vagonate di merda sul Gadget. Egli infatti nonostante il suo curriculum eccezionale ha qualche carenza manageriale.

Il buon ispettore non è il miglior gestore di persone e neanche un organizzatore. Diciamo anche che, per restare su metafore ispettoresche, sarebbe anche un buon ispettore Clouseau (celebre una sua caduta in mensa e l'apertura della bottiglia di champagne all'ultimo pot de départ (bicchierata d'addio) delle stagiste...).



Per capire la situazione vi ripeto la struttura gerarchica del dipartimento:

Direttore: Gadget
Dirigenti: Ariano (mio ufficio), Alternativa (l'altro ufficio), Bridget (inutile);
Sotto ci sono i quadri (sarebbe funzionari), tre da noi e tre con l'Alternativa.

Ora il buon Ariano che, oltre ad avere un ottimo curriculum, è un bravo gestore, ha le sue idee ed è energico tanto quanto il Gadget è morbido fino all'esasperazione. Non riuscendo a fargli le scarpe, l'Ariano se ne va verso altri progetti. L'Alternativa è in maternità e Bridget continua a dare prova della sua inutilità.

Inoltre nel nostro ufficio una dei quadri va in un altro dipartimento e un altro l'anno prossimo emigra a ts. E pure la segretaria è in procinto di lasciarci.

Si è creato quindi un buco gerarchico.

Gadget a giugno ha annunciato solennemente:

"sto riflettendo sull'organizzazione. In autunno ci saranno cambiamenti. Non inquietatevi, ci sto riflettendo"

Detto ciò ha evitato ogni ulteriore riferimento nascondendosi fino a venerdì scorso quando alle 19.45 ha mandato una mail per dire che faremo delle riunioni settimanali. Poi è partito per 5 (cinque) settimane di ferie in Australia.

Ovviamente tutti sono un po' inquieti sul futuro e per alcuni l'inquietudine si manifesta in colloqui di lavoro. In questo caos calmo io me la rido, pur studiando la musicale lingua di Goethe. Quando viene la prof. Oggi ha tirato buca. Meglio, così ho il tempo per postare, ma per fare un po' lo studioso mi sono anche stampato un articolo del FAZ (Frankfurter Allgemeine) - capisco niente di sta lingua...

A parte i pettegolezzi lavorativi, col caldo estivo si moltiplicano gli aperitivi. E' già il secondo lunedi che faccio il tour Lizard Louge/Petit fer à cheval/Politburo (anzi, ieri Cuba). Bello aperitivare di lunedì. Anche se avevo ancora addosso un po' di stanchezza del week end - sabato tornando a casa c'erano già i tipi che montavano le bancarelle del mercato... se aspettavo mezz'ora potevo fare la spesa.

Da domani sono in ferie, oggi arrivano a Paris Tanja&Aljosa, domani riposo e giovedì vado a Copenaghen per una grigliata di compleanno. Poi mi paleserò a Trst il 22 agosto.
